Mongoose Bikes

A Brief History of Mongoose Bikes…

Mongoose Bikes was a brand name of bikes originally designed, manufactured, and sold by BMX Products, Inc.motomag mongoose wheel

In September of 1974, Skip Hess started BMX Products, Inc. out of his home in Simi Valley, California.  His first bicycle was the innovative Motomag One Wheel, a cast aluminium mag wheel.

In 1985 Mongoose was sold to American Group and marketed by their Service Cycle subsidiary.

In 1995  Bell Sport,  bought American Group.

In 1997 Bell Sport sold Mongoose to Brunswick Outdoor Recreation Group.

In 2000 Brunswick sold Mongoose to Pacific Cycle.

In 2004 Pacific Cycle was bought by Montreal-based Dorel Industries

Skip Hess went on to develop the Electra brand, but he stepped down in 2014 when it was sold to Trek.

Back in 1974, the BMX Products, Inc company was originally known for their famous MotoMags wheels which were produced from cast magnesium.

The MotoMags wheels were their founding brand product.

Magnesium, and now, lightweight alloy, still continues to feature heavily in the manufacture of Mongoose Bikes and other Pacific Cycle products.

Mongoose Bikes are now just one brand of many in the vast stable of performance bicycles owned by, Wisconsin based, Pacific Cycle Inc.

Mongoose Bicycles are essentially produced and marketed for two different demographics.mongoose bikes logo

Firstly, their expensive, SCHMICK bikes are retailed through specialty bicycle stores.
Through this more illustrious product, Mongoose Bikes raise their brand profile by being deeply involved in sponsorship of professional cycling events, tours and individual cycling athletes.

The other style of Mongoose Bicycles are those low-end, mass-produced bikes which are distributed by major chain-stores at discount prices.

The different types of bicycles created and sold by Mongoose are:

  • Mountain bicycles
  • BMX
  • Street bikes.

Since 1977, Pacific Cycles has gone on to expand its repertoire of goods to include the sale and distribution of many other major bicycle brands including:
